Article directories play a vital role by providing webmasters with unlimited free content for their web sites. Article directories also give authors a way of promoting themselves, their products, websites, and services by providing valuable information in their articles. Well written articles attract thousands of readers. Everyone benefits. Webmasters get free content. Authors get free publicity. And internet users get the free information they're looking for.

However in recent years, article directories have sprung up all over the internet. Will they all be successful? What is the future of these online, article 'banks'?

At this time the internet is littered with article directories. Most of these websites will not attract many visitors. However the internet is also home to many websites that aren't going anywhere fast. Pick almost any topic and you'll find hundreds, - if not thousands of lonely web pages that aren't going to be found by anyone! Why? Because people put these pages on the web, then forgot about them. Or they write about topics most people are not interested in. As long as information is old, unappealing, or static, what reason is there for visitors to return? Been there, done that, ... NEXT!!!

And that's the exactly the attitude of internet users today. Some are looking to shop and buy products at a discount, but the vast majority are looking for information. Some information is just as useful today as it was 25 years ago, but because our world is changing so rapidly, most information is outdated in a couple of years.

What's this got to do with article directories? Well, - popular article directories contain thousands of timely articles. Successful directories will offer visitors a steady stream of new content. This will attract even more visitors and top notch authors. Outdated information will need to be deleted and new information added on a daily basis. This is a lot of work and a huge commitment.

How many owners of article directories are willing to spend the time managing, marketing, and developing their online business? How many people are willing to invest a large amount of time and money into something that may not bring them any financial reward whatsoever? Not many, especially if there's no guarantee that they'll ever make any money. Most would be webmasters get off to a good start, put some pages on the web looking for big profits and then get discouraged after a few months. As a result, you'll fund hundreds of article directories and other types of web sites that have been abandoned. People are still putting up websites that will be complete failures.

So what's the future of article directories? Some will be fabulously successful. Successful directories will continue to be popular article 'banks' where webmasters can pick up new articles for their websites. It's win-win-win situation for business owners, writers, webmasters, and seekers of information.

The billion dollar question is which article directories are going to succeed and which ones will fail. Is it a gamble? It might appear to be, but it's not. It all depends on management. Owners with time, money, and experience running successful businesses will run profitable article directories as long as people continue to use the internet. We live in a highly competitive, global marketplace. Some will succeed. But most will not. The vast majority of article directory owners don't have the experience or ambition to succeed in the business. Most people quickly discover that making money on the internet is not as easy as they thought. This is especially true with article directories. No problem. Hopefully they didn't quit their day job.
